For the last five years Out Now has commemorated National Coming Out Day with the annual National Coming Out Day Soirée, a queertastic extravaganza. Each year youth, staff, and alumni of Out Now participate in the Soirée to showcase queer talent. This year we had over 130 people in attendance. Out Now supporters, family, and friends came out to support Out Now and enjoy an amazing show.
Participants really pushed their own boundaries by playing with gender and we invited the audience to participate in this as well by selecting an item they consider different from their own gender. People wore fake mustaches, bow ties, and lots of costume jewelry. A few youth experimented with gender by trying drag for the first time, and all had an empowered experience. We also had spoken word and dance performances, as well as a few amazing vocalist that really impressed.
As always the highlight of the evening was when we invited audience members up on stage to tell their coming out stories. Each year more and more youth tell their stories, and it captures the spirit of National Coming Out Day in a very personal way. This past years event was a great success and we are already focusing our energy to make next year’s event even better.
