What do We Want? Justice, Now!

Exactly three years ago today, about a dozen Springfield police officers descended upon the living room of African-American Charles Wilhite (26 years old at the time) who resided with his girlfriend and young daughter in the Six Corners section of Springfield in an apartment near Gerrish Park.  Thus began a nightmarish journey through the criminal (in)justice system for Chuck and his family.  Despite being granted a new trial in May, Charles will endure his one thousand one hundredth day caged, behind bars this Friday for a crime he clearly did not commit.

Please join us at either of the following events this week (or both!) to together bear witness to cruel injustice and continue building the movement for transparency, accountability, and freedom!  If you are looking for a ride, please call/text Dan at 617-460-5238.

On Tuesday, September 18, 2012 from noon-1pm: “Resisting the New Jim Crow in the Pioneer Valley and the Campaign to Free Charles Wilhite of Springfield,” presented by the Student Chapter of the Western New England University National Lawyers Guild. The panel discussion will be held at the Western New England University Law School Commons, located at 1215 Wilbraham Road.  Speakers include Edward Cage, uncle to Charles Wilhite, Sheldon Gaynor, community activist, Ellen Graves from Arise for Social Justice, and Holly Richardson from Out Now.

On Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 9:23am in Superior Court50 State Street, Springfield, Charles’ appellate attorney David A.F. Lewis from Cambridge is expected to present the “Defendant’s Motion to Dismiss Indictment” which was filed last month (here’s the document online).  Lewis will argue that there is insufficient evidence to pursue a new trial.  Our candlelight vigil will be held from 6 am to 9 am – feel free to join us when you can!  Check out the facebook event here.

We say, no more business as usual!  In the words of Frederick Douglas, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.”  We will quietly submit no longer.  Together we are powerful!  We are One, we are Charles!
